dig licking pets purest salmon oil bottle

If you're a pet owner, you know that keeping your furry friend healthy and happy is a top priority. And if you're a dog owner, you may be wondering what the best way to do that is. One option is to give your pup Scottish salmon oil. But what is Scottish salmon oil for dogs? Keep reading to find out!

What is salmon oil for dogs?

Scottish salmon oil is ethically sourced from sustainable Scottish Salmon reared in the deep sea lochs of Scotland.

It is slowly extracted to maintain the powerful antioxidant qualities along with the rich source of Omega 3 fatty acids.

100% purity means there are no artificial additives or nasty preservatives; however, Scottish Salmon oil is available in less pure amounts.

What are the benefits?

Salmon oil is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which offer a whole host of health benefits. Supplementing your dog's diet with salmon oil can help to improve their skin and coat condition, reduce inflammation and joint pain, and boost their immune system.

Omega-3 fatty acids are also beneficial for cognitive function and brain health, making salmon oil an ideal supplement for senior dogs. So if you're looking to give your four-legged friend a little extra boost of goodness, salmon oil is a great option!

One of the most important benefits of salmon oil is that it can help to reduce inflammation throughout the body. This is especially beneficial for older dogs, who are more likely to suffer from conditions like arthritis and joint pain.

Skin

Salmon oil is a natural source of long-chain fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) which are proven to improve the coat and skin, giving pets a soft, strong and shiny coat.

Some studies have even found that omega fatty acids in salmon and fish oils helped to treat pruritic (itchy) skin disease and rashes that are often associated with seasonal allergies.

Dogs that received regular dietary supplementation with EPA and DHA had better coat quality and less itching than those in placebo groups.

Brain

Omega-3 helps to repair and maintain brain cells.

Supplementing this into your pets daily diet can not only support healthy brain development in young puppies, kittens and foals but also help to reduce the risk of cognitive decline with human studies even proving a link between omega 3 and the prevention of conditions such as Alzheimer's disease.

Heart

The anti-inflammatory benefits of salmon oil can also help support healthy heart function with some studies showing that omega-3 fatty acids can also have anti-arrhythmic properties that can help aid conditions where there is an irregular heartbeat.

Omega-3’d also help to lower triglyceride levels, a type of fat in the blood that increases the risk factor of heart disease and stroke.

As if all this wasn’t enough there are further studies that would suggest that salmon oil can also provide benefits to vision and the immune system! This wonder oil is packed full of benefits and on top of that is also a delicious addition to your pet's food!

Joints

We previously featured salmon oil in our blog “3 Products To Help Improve Your Pets Joints” where we looked at how Omega-3 acids are an important component of healthy cell membranes and help to reduce inflammation which causes pain and discomfort in joints.

In our blog “Customer Story: Harvey's Journey To Better Health” Harvey's owner shared how salmon oil had helped senior Labrador Harvey get a new lease on life.

How long does salmon oil take to work for dogs?

The answer depends on a few factors.

It can take a few weeks for the effects to be noticeable. The amount of salmon oil you give your dog also plays a role in how quickly it works, this will depend on a few factors, including your dog's size, age, and health.

A general rule of thumb is to start with a smaller dose and increase it gradually over time.

You should also consult with your veterinarian to make sure salmon oil is safe for your dog and to determine the best dosage.

With patience and proper administration, salmon oil can provide many benefits for your furry friend.

Is salmon oil good for a dog’s itchy skin?

Salmon oil is known to have anti-inflammatory properties. This can be helpful for dogs with itchy skin, as inflammation is often the root cause of the itchiness.

In addition, it can help to improve the quality of your dog's coat, making it shinier and smoother. Some pet owners also find that salmon oil helps to reduce shedding.

How much salmon oil should I give my dog?

When it comes to giving salmon oil to your dog, it's always better to err on the side of caution.

Too much salmon oil can cause loose stools or diarrhoea in some dogs. If you notice any adverse effects after giving salmon oil to your dog, reduce the amount you're giving them or discontinue use altogether.

We suggest the following dosage amounts:

Mix with your pet’s food, introduce gradually over 1 week

  • Small (<10kg) 2-5ml per day
  • Medium (10-25kg) 5-10ml per day
  • Large (25-50kg) 10-15ml per day
  • Extra Large (50kg+) 15-20ml per day

Are there any side effects related to giving dogs salmon oil?

Giving salmon oil to dogs is generally considered to be safe, but there are a few potential side effects to be aware of. The most common issue is gastrointestinal upset, which can cause vomiting and diarrhoea.

Some dogs may also be allergic to salmon oil, and it can cause skin irritation in some cases. It's important to talk to your veterinarian before giving salmon oil to your dog, just to make sure that it's the right supplement for them.

In most cases, salmon oil is safe for dogs and can provide a host of health benefits.

Is salmon oil good for dogs' joints?

The anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3 fatty acids can help to reduce pain and swelling in the joints, while the lubricating effect of the oil can help to improve mobility.

In addition, salmon oil can also help to strengthen the connective tissue around the joints, which can further protect against damage. For all these reasons, salmon oil is an excellent natural supplement for dogs with joint problems.

How do you store salmon oil for dogs?

Once you have obtained the salmon oil, it is important to store it properly to maintain its freshness and potency.

The best way to store salmon oil is in a cool, dark place like a pantry or cupboard. If you live in a hot climate, you may want to store the salmon oil in the refrigerator.

However, it is important to keep the salmon oil in a sealed container to prevent it from going rancid.

Is salmon oil suitable for puppies?

Salmon oil is a healthy, natural way to improve your puppy's coat and skin.

However, salmon oil is not suitable for all puppies. If your puppy has allergies or sensitive skin, salmon oil may not be the right choice for them. Always speak to your veterinarian before adding any new supplements to your Puppy's diet.

I must say I’ve been using a drop of this everyday in my dogs eve meal. She’s 2 now and I started it when she was 10 weeks old and I don’t know if it’s coincidence or the oil (I’m pretty sure it’s got to be the oil) but the amount of people that stop and comment on how shiny and soft my dogs coat is. She’s a black cockapoo . I would highly recommend this product and I myself will continue to use it. The bottle goes a very long way you only need a little squirt.
